Mitsubishi's automotive origins date back to 1917, when the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Corp., Ltd. introduced the Mitsubishi Type A, Japan's first series-production car or truck. An entirely hand-built seven-seater sedan in line with the Fiat Tipo 3, it proved expensive when compared to its American and American mass-produced rivals, and was discontinued throughout 1921 after only 22 ended up built. In 1934, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding was merged with all the Mitsubishi Aircraft Co., a company established inside 1920 to manufacture aircraft engines and other parts. The unified company was generally known as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and was the most significant private company in Okazaki, japan. MHI concentrated on producing aircraft, ships, railroad cars and equipment, but in 1937 created the PX33, a prototype sedan intended for military use. It was the primary Japanese-built passenger car having full-time four-wheel drive, a technology the company would return to almost fifty years later in its quest for motorsport and sales success.

Immediately following the end of the 2nd World War, the company returned in order to manufacturing vehicles. Fuso bus production resumed, while a small three-wheeled cargo vehicle called the Mizushima as well as a scooter called the Silver Pigeon were also developed. However, the zaibatsu (Japan's family-controlled industrial conglomerates) were ordered being dismantled by the Allied powers in 1950, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was split into three regional companies, each with an involvement in car development: West Japan Heavy-Industries, Central Japan Heavy-Industries, and East Japan Heavy-Industries.East Japan Heavy-Industries commenced importing the Henry N, an inexpensive American car built by Kaiser Motors, in knockdown kit (CKD) form in 1951, and continued to bring the crooks to Japan for the remainder with the car's three-year production work. The same year, Central Japan Heavy-Industries concluded an identical contract with Willys (today owned by Kaiser) for CKD-assembled Jeep CJ-3Bs. This deal proved more durable, with licensed Mitsubishi Jeeps inside production until 1998, thirty years after Willys themselves had replaced the style.

By the start of the 1960s Japan's economy was gearing up; wages were rising and thinking about family motoring was taking off. Now it was prepared to introduce the Mitsubishi 500, a mass market four door, to meet the fresh demand from consumers. It followed this in 1962 using the Minica kei car and also the Colt 1000, the first of its Colt brand of family cars, in 1963. In 1964, Mitsubishi introduced its major passenger sedan, the Mitsubishi Debonair as being a luxury car primarily to the Japanese market, and was used through senior Mitsubishi executives as a company car.West Japan Heavy-Industries (today renamed Mitsubishi Shipbuilding & Design) and East Japan Heavy-Industries (now Mitsubishi Nihon Heavy-Industries) received also expanded their automotive departments inside 1950s, and the three have been re-integrated as Mitsubishi Hefty Industries in 1964. Within three years its output was over 70, 000 vehicles annually. Following the successful introduction in the first Galant in 1969 and similar growth featuring a commercial vehicle division, it was decided the company should create a single operation to pay attention to the automotive industry. This logo of three red diamonds, shared with over forty others within the keiretsu, predates Mitsubishi Motors itself by almost a hundred years. It was chosen simply by Iwasaki Yatarō, the founder of Mitsubishi, as it was suggestive on the emblem of the Tosa Group who first employed him or her, and because his personal family crest was a few rhombuses stacked atop the other. The name Mitsubishi is really a compound of mitsu ("three") as well as hishi (literally, "water chestnut", often used in Japanese people to denote a diamonds or rhombus).
